I’m always intrigued by iridescence in animals and wanted to do an entire painting where that was the focus. Tyler Rugge was amazing enough to supply me reference photos of his Sunbeam Snake (Xenopeltis unicolor) and this piece is titled after the model.

The Sunbeam Snake (Xenopeltis unicolor) is native to Southeast Asia and is a burrowing species with a narrow, wedge-shaped head that blends smoothly into its body, helping it move easily through soil. Its most distinctive feature is its sleek, highly polished scales, which give it an iridescent sheen—hence its common name. A layer of dark pigmentation beneath each scale enhances this striking iridescence.
