This acrylic painting celebrates the Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), named for the Aztec deity Xolotl—the god of fire and lightning—who, according to legend, transformed into an axolotl to escape sacrifice. That mythical connection mirrors the species’ own story of survival: though critically endangered in the wild, the axolotl has evaded extinction by thriving in homes and aquariums around the world.
