This original painting depicts Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes), Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus), Cabbage White (Pieris rapae), and American Copper (Lycaena phlaeas) butterflies perched on Coyote (Canis latrans) skulls in a stylized yet naturalistic composition. The delicate butterflies are contrasted against the weathered skulls, creating a striking juxtaposition of life and death while highlighting the intricate patterns, forms, and textures found in both.
The composition emphasizes the contrast between the fragile beauty of butterflies and the permanence of bone. I especially enjoyed playing with the humor of gaudy “fragile” and “handle with care” imagery alongside natural subjects associated with death. This piece was also a fun departure from my usual reptile-focused work and my first non-reptile feature piece in quite a while.
